A flat, stony river plain just below Collio that produces whites nearly as good as the hills at lower prices, thanks to the red gravel soils and the drying bora wind. The style is riper and rounder than the hill wines: Friulano with ripe pear and almond, Sauvignon with passion fruit and sage, Pinot Grigio with real texture. Vie di Romans and Lis Neris make barrel-aged single-vineyard whites that are among the most serious in Italy; Ronco del Gelso and Borgo Conventi cover the fresher end.
