Val d'Arno di Sopra (Valdarno di Sopra) DOC
A young DOC for a zone Cosimo III singled out in his 1716 decree, revived by Petrolo and Il Borro and now the only Tuscan DOC that requires organic farming. It allows both Sangiovese and single-variety international reds, so it ranges from savory, cherry-and-iron Sangiovese to dense, velvety Merlot. Petrolo's Galatrona (Merlot) and Boggina (Sangiovese) are the wines that made the name, with cassis, plum, graphite and long, fine-grained tannin. Il Borro supplies the affordable end.
