Malvasia
Another surname rather than a grape. The Malvasias of Italy include white and red vines that are not related to each other, spread from Friuli to Sicily, and the appellation rules frequently just say Malvasia. What they share is a name and, usually, some degree of aroma.
Worth knowing
The name traces to Monemvasia, a fortified port in the Peloponnese that Venice used as a trading base. It was a brand for sweet wine shipped west long before it was ever the name of a vine, which is why so many unrelated grapes ended up wearing it.
