Trebbiano

Less a grape than a surname. Several unrelated vines carry the Trebbiano name across Italy, and the appellation rules often just say Trebbiano and leave the rest to the grower. What they mostly have in common is high yield, high acid and low aroma, which is why so much Italian white of the last century was forgettable.

Worth knowing

Trebbiano Toscano and Trebbiano Abruzzese are different vines, and the best Trebbiano d'Abruzzo is often made from neither of them. It is usually Bombino Bianco. Valentini's Trebbiano d'Abruzzo is one of the great white wines of Italy and the confusion around what is actually in the bottle has never really been cleared up.
