Red
Carmenere
A Bordeaux red that all but vanished in France and survived in the Veneto, Friuli and Chile. It gives dark fruit, a green peppercorn note and soft tannin, and it needs real ripeness or the herbaceous side takes over completely.
Worth knowing
Italy spent most of a century growing it while calling it Cabernet Franc. The mistake was only untangled by DNA testing, and several appellations had to add Carmenère to their rules to legalise vines that had been in the ground for decades.
