Colli Euganei DOC

A cluster of extinct volcanoes rising out of the Po plain, with warm slopes that ripen Bordeaux grapes better than almost anywhere else in the Veneto. The reds are the point: Merlot and Cabernet blends with black plum, dried herb, iron and a tarry note from the volcanic soil, medium to full bodied, and the riservas from Vignalta and Il Filò delle Vigne age ten years. Serprino, the local frizzante from Glera, is Prosecco's rustic cousin and worth a glass on the hills. Whites are a mixed bag; the Moscato-based wines went to the Fior d'Arancio DOCG in 2011.
