Verdeca

A Puglian white from the Itria valley around Locorotondo and Martina Franca, where the trulli are. Light, high in acid, low in aroma and firmly dry, with a green apple and almond character. Grown at altitude on limestone it keeps a freshness that the rest of Puglia struggles for.

Worth knowing

For most of the twentieth century it was grown to be a vermouth base, shipped north to Turin to be flavoured with herbs and fortified. Being neutral and acidic was the point. It is only recently that anyone has tried to make it interesting on its own.
