Malvasia Bianca

A widely permitted white that turns up across central and southern Italy, usually as a minority partner in a blend. It brings a faint floral aroma and a soft, low acid body to wines built on something sharper. Its most important job in Tuscany is in Vin Santo, alongside Trebbiano Toscano.

Worth knowing

The appellation rules often say Malvasia Bianca and nothing more, which leaves the grower a genuine choice between several different vines. The name marks a style of grape rather than a single variety, which is a recurring problem with Malvasia everywhere.
