Pinot Grigio
Also called Pinot Gris.
A colour mutation of Pinot Nero that has become the most exported white in Italy. Grown flat and cropped hard in the Veneto it makes the neutral wine everyone knows. Grown on the slopes of Friuli and Alto Adige it is a different proposition, with pear, a little smoke and a proper texture, and it repays being taken seriously.
Worth knowing
The skins are greyish pink rather than green, and if you leave the juice on them you get a copper coloured wine. Friuli calls it ramato and has been making it that way far longer than the orange wine fashion has existed.
