Sauvignon Blanc
Also called Sauvignon.
Grown mostly in Friuli and Alto Adige, where the cool sites and long autumns give a wine with less shouting than it does elsewhere: white peach, elderflower and a chalky, mineral finish rather than an assault of gooseberry. It is also permitted in a long list of central Italian blends where it rarely adds much.
Worth knowing
In Italian rules it is usually written simply as Sauvignon, and in Emilia what growers called Sauvignon for a century turned out on testing to be Spergola, a local variety. The name on a disciplinare and the vine in the ground have not always agreed.
