Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso
Also called Refosco.
Friuli's main native red, dark and firm with plum, blackberry and a bitter herbal finish over high acid. It needs a warm site to ripen its tannin and turns green and hard if it does not get one. The good ones from the Colli Orientali have real depth and take a decade comfortably.
Worth knowing
The full name means Refosco with the red stalk, and that is the identification: the stem of the bunch turns red as it ripens. Several other Refoscos exist, including the Terrano of the Carso, and they are different vines.
