Aleatico
An aromatic red, grown on Elba, in Puglia and around Lake Bolsena in Lazio, and almost always made sweet. The grapes are dried in the sun or on racks, and the wine comes out deep, perfumed and syrupy, with rose, cherry and a spice note. It is the rare Italian dessert red that is not fortified and does not need to be.
Worth knowing
It is a red skinned relative of Moscato, and it tastes like it. There are not many red grapes anywhere with that muscat perfume, and once you have noticed it in the glass you cannot unnotice it.
