WhiteLead grape in 1
Fiano
The other great white of Avellino, grown on clay and limestone at altitude. Low yielding, with a waxy, hazelnut and honeyed character over firm acid, and a texture that sets it apart from almost every other Italian white. Young it can be closed and unhelpful. At five years it opens into something very good indeed.
Worth knowing
The Latin name Apianum, which appears on labels, refers to bees, which are said to have been drawn to the sweetness of the ripe grapes. The bees are as close to a marketing department as the grape had for about two thousand years.
