Greco
Also called Greco di Tufo.
A Campanian white, at its best in Greco di Tufo in the hills of Avellino. It is thicker skinned than most whites, giving a wine with real body, firm acid and a smoky, almost sulphurous mineral edge, with stone fruit and a bitter almond finish. It ages far better than its price suggests.
Worth knowing
Tufo is a mining town. Sulphur was dug out of the hills there into the twentieth century, and the smoky struck match character in the wine is part of the local identity rather than a fault to be corrected.
