Inzolia

Also called Ansonica.

A Sicilian white, grown across the west of the island and known as Ansonica on the Tuscan coast and on Giglio and Elba. It gives a soft, nutty, low acid wine with a bitter almond finish, and it browns easily, which is why it was so useful in Marsala. Picked early on the right site it keeps enough freshness to stand on its own.

Worth knowing

It doubles as a table grape, which tells you about the size of the berries and the thickness of the skin. On Giglio it is grown on terraces so steep that everything is carried by hand, and the wine there tastes of salt in a way the Sicilian version does not.
